Wines said to come from « organically grown grapes» can use the French « AB » (organic farming) logo. This means that we comply with “Organic Farming” specifications and that we do not use any chemical fertilizers, or chemical weed killers, or pesticides, or chemical fungicides. The French « AB » logo comes from the French Agricultural Ministry.
ECOCERT is an organic inspection and a certification organism founded in 1991 by agronomists for sustainable development, which aims to offer recognition to those who engage in this type of production. The ECOCERT’s principal activity consists in an inspection, in the field, of the respects of a standard’s demands (regulation, standard or specification). Then, ECOCERT issues a document which certifies the compliance of the products, systems or services with the standard. ECOCERT principally certifies food and food products but also certifies cosmetics, detergents, perfumes and textiles.
SYNDICAT INTERNATIONAL VIGNERONS EN CULTURE BIO-DYNAMIQUE. In 1998, the members judged it essential to determine, in practical terms, the fundamental principles that any wine producing property must respect in order to be able to describe itself as a biodynamic operation. A specific set of specifications for the growing of vines and vinification was therefore established, excluding the use of all oenological products that aim to modify the grapes’ initial balance and neutralize the effect of vintages, with a view to preserving all of the potential of the “terroir” in the wine and retaining the energy capital acquired by the biodynamic farming of the vines. In order for inspections to be as objective as possible, the Union decided to entrust them to an independent body, ECOCERT SAS France, which checks that each member property respects the viticulture and vinification requirements. After four years of conversion to biodynamic agriculture, the SIVCBD issues official BIODYVIN approval to members that have been inspected during this period. All SIVCBD domains’ member are therefore AB certified by an inspection body and BIODYVIN by the SIVCBD following the Ecocert SAS France control.
BIODYNAMICS WORKS FOR: feed the earth and men, respect the living, the rhythms and the terroir, strengthen soil life and plant health, create balanced farm property. Demeter is a reference to the Greek Goddess of grain and fertility. The Demeter certification program was established in 1928, and as such was the first ecological label for organically produced foods. Demeter products have a double certification: they are controlled and certified organic according to the European specifications and according to the Demeter specifications. Demeter biodynamic certification is used in over 50 countries, it guarantees the respect of the biodynamic principles on farm property and during the transformation of the products.
Ratings "L'Ermite 2009 White"
R. Parker - Wine Advocate - 100/100
"From pre-phylloxera Marsanne vines thatare over 100 years of age and are notplanted on American root stocks, the 2009Ermitage l’Ermite Blanc 229 casesreveals abundant notes of honeysuckle, aliqueur of wet stones, tannin which nodoubt comes from the sappiness in theseold vines, extraordinary minerality, whitefruits, quince and citrus oil. This amazingwhite wine must be tasted to be believed. It is so structured, intense and rich that itwill unquestionably keep for a century."
Vinous - 94/100
"Bright gold. Explosive spice- and smoke-accented aromas of candied tropical and citrus fruits, jasmine, iodine and honey. The palate offers intense, palate-staining pineapple and pear flavors plus notes of ginger, mace and chalky minerals. The wine's mineral element builds with air and carries through a very long, sappy, focused finish."
Jancis Robinson - 19/20
"Deep honey gold. It would be fatal to taste these whites with this one first as, although the less dramatic bottlings seem fantastically concentrated, this one knocks one’s socks off. It reaches new levels of concentration. I can’t remember any white this exuberant and dense in previous vintages. There’s a nuttiness here, a vague whiff of manzanilla, but also an amazing amount of ripe fruit. Greengages perhaps. Something honeyed and explosive in the mouth. But again, the acid is balanced on a knife edge. Long and exotic. So full that it will be quite challenging to find a suitable food match for this."
In the Rhone Valley, or through the most beautiful regions of France and the world, the Maison M. CHAPOUTIER lets the terroir express itself.
complex aromas of vanilla, almonds, dried fruits and linden-tree. The minerality is marked (typical of the soil).
very round and rich wine. An elegant balance, with a light bitterness at the end. Very ripe white fruit aromas (peach and apricot). Beautiful length in mouth and a huge complexity. According to the vintage, the wine can be kept from 30 to 60 years, indeed from 50 to 75 years.
Marsanne. Selection of our oldest vines.
Hand harvesting at maturity.
Situated at the top of the Hermitage hill, around the chapel, in a place named the “Ermite”, soils are very poor and granitic.
After a light cold-settling, fermentation is entirely made in casks between 18 and 20°C.
After a long period of fermentation, the wine is matured on lees, with regular stirrings, between 10 and 12 months.
