Do you know the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation?
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a legendary wine, and its history is closely linked to the papal history of Avignon. Since the decree of 1936, it has been recognized as France's first AOC, a symbol of excellence and tradition. The translation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is "New Castle of the Pope". The history of this commune and its wine is intimately linked to papal history. In 1308, Pope Clement V, archbishop of Bordeaux, established the papacy in Avignon. Clement V and the Popes who succeeded him are known to have been great lovers of wine, and did much to promote it during the 70 years of the papacy in Avignon. Under the papal authority of John XXII, the wines of this appellation became known as the "Pope's wines". This term later became Châteauneuf-du-Pape. john XXII was responsible for the construction of the château.Serus, a tribute to history and innovation
Serus, the new red Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Maison M. CHAPOUTIER, embodies the meeting of northern know-how and southern Terroir. By choosing a single grape variety: Syrah, this wine stands out from the traditional blends of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, creating a bold bridge between the Northern and Southern Rhône Valleys.
An emblematic grape variety of the Rhône Valley, Syrah expresses finesse and delicacy with fruity and spicy notes. The result of a cross between Dureza and Mondeuse blanche, this variety has become the preferred choice for our red wines.
The expression of an exceptional Terroir
Serus draws its strenght from the legendary Terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where 3.210 hectares of vines flourish under the generous sunshine of 2.800 hours a year. This exceptional wine is the fruit of a meticulous selection of plots, notably the lieux-dits Font de Michelle, Les Grandes Serres Ouest and Barbe d'Asne, where rolled pebbles and molassic sands create a unique Terroir.
Made from hand-harvested grapes at optimum ripeness, Serus is distinguished by its whole-bunch Vinification and 12-month ageing in demi-muids, giving the wine a rare freshness and complexity. With its purple color, Serus seduces with a floral nose of rose and violet, enhanced by hints of smoked bacon. On the palate, the wine offers a fresh attack, velvety tannins and a long finish with black fruits and spices.
Its name is inspired by the Latin word "Serus" meaning "late", evoking the slow ripening of Syrah, a symbol of patience and perfection. And its label is inspired by the papal coat of arms, symbolizing our commitment to authenticity and innovation. The cluster of grapes on the coat of arms underlines the importance of the grape variety in the exceptional wine.
Serus is not just a wine, it is an innovation to rediscover Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a new light.
PIE VI, a full-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Another emblematic Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Maison M. CHAPOUTIER, PIE VI takes you to the heart of the appellation for an unforgettable Taste journey. Made from Grenache and Syrah grapes, the vines are planted on low Rhône terraces composed of ancient alluvium and rolled galets. On the nose, the wine reveals notes of ripe black fruits, spices and bitter cocoa, which give way to notes of blackberry jelly and aromatic herbs with aeration. On tasting, it offers velvety tannins and a fine balance between concentration and complexity.
PIE VI can be kept for 15 to 20 years to reveal all its complexity and finesse.
Wine pairing with a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape ?
The Terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape offer wines with character, and we have come up with some ideas for pairing them.
For the first pairing with Serus, we suggest a creamy saffron risotto accompanied by snacked scallops. All the richness, gourmandise and saffron notes of this dish will go perfectly with the freshness, vegetal notes and velvety tannins of the Serus wine.
PIE VI is a perfect match for meat dishes such as a pig's cheek confit with chanterelle mushrooms. Its velvety tannins and finish with hints of sweet spices and dark chocolate are a perfect match for the meat's tenderness and candied aromas. A sublime match!
For a meal with family or friends, we recommend you try our new Serus wine with roast beef in a herb sauce, accompanied by garlic-glazed potatoes. A traditional dish that will delight everyone.
